This page discusses a bug most frequently found in Windows 11, where the Cadfil graphics window will open, but the Cadfil text window fails to launch or closes. This is due to Microsoft changing long established Windows behaviour in recent updates, and now using the Microsoft Windows Console application interface gives unexpected and unpredictable results. This potential issue has been patched in Cadfil versions 981 or later to work with either console.

Windows Terminal Settings

This bug is caused by the 'Windows Terminal' settings, as shown in the picture below:

If the Windows Terminal setting is set to 'Windows Terminal' the Cadfil text window will not work. The 'Let Windows decide' option may also choose the Windows Terminal option, in which case Cadfil will not work correctly.

Cadfil should run correctly if 'Windows Console Host' is selected. This step is no longer necessary on Cadfil versions later than 981.
